    DEFINITIONS

    Newcomers
You have only been dancing for 12-months or less. You have never competed and are dancing only at the newcomer or maybe bronze level. You probably will be dancing Bronze level steps (although you may not know this); just nothing fancy. Don't forget to ask your teacher if you are learning American or International style. No costumes permitted. [See "Dress Code"]
    Open Levels
All Open Levels are sanctioned events and thus will follow all USA Dance rules.

Novice: Not restricted to syllabus; open figures may be danced. Costumes encouraged but not required.

Pre-Championship: Not restricted to syllabus; open figures may be danced. Costumes encouraged but not required.

Championship: Not restricted to syllabus; open figures may be danced. Costumes encouraged but not required.

Open-To-All or FUN : Not restricted to syllabus. Costumes optional.
    Syllabus
The NCC follows all accepted NDCA syllabi. Please be aware that there are differences between the different syllabi. In general most USA Dance competitions follow the ISTD syllabui for Standard and Latin and follow the USISTD syllabi for Smooth and Rhythm.

Costumes are NOT permitted in any syllabus level event.
    Syllabus Levels
ALL SYLLABUS EVENTS WILL BE INVIGILATED. As the Youth & College Network (YCN) continues to standardize and mainstream its competitions, it is important for you to understand that in the Syllabus events you will be invigilated. This means that you will be restricted to dancing only "Bronze" steps at the Bronze level, "Silver" (including any Bronze) steps at the Silver level, and "Gold" (including any Bronze and Silver steps) at the Gold level. If you try to--or accidentally--slip in a step belonging to a "higher" level (i.e., dancing a step from the Silver Syllabus during a Bronze level competition), then you will be penalized and may be disqualified. [Big hint: "When in doubt, leave it out!"] The syllabus levels are:

Bronze Syllabus: Any steps from the Bronze Syllabus may be danced. You will be invigilated. Open material will be penalized. No costumes permitted.

Silver Syllabus: Any steps from the Bronze and/or Silver Syllabus may be danced. You will be invigilated. Open material will be penalized. No costumes permitted.

Gold Syllabus: Any steps from the Bronze and/or Silver and/or Gold Syllabus may be danced. You will be invigilated. Open material will be penalized. No costumes permitted.
